A recent study, "Frontiers | What does the public think about artificial intelligence?—A criticality map to understand bias in the public perception of AI," explored laypersons' perceptions of artificial intelligence (AI), focusing on their expectations regarding future AI developments and their evaluations of those developments. The research employed a two-stage approach: an expert workshop to identify key AI-related topics, followed by an online survey of 122 participants to assess their likelihood and valence ratings for each topic.


The results revealed a surprisingly nuanced public perception. While some AI developments, such as AI assisting with unpleasant tasks, were viewed as both likely and positive, others, like AI's susceptibility to hacking or its potential to exacerbate communication issues, were perceived as highly probable yet undesirable. This highlights a key finding: there was no significant correlation between perceived likelihood and evaluation of AI-related developments. In other words, people's beliefs about the probability of future AI developments did not necessarily align with their views on whether those developments would be beneficial or harmful. The study's criticality map visually represents these diverse and sometimes conflicting perceptions.


Further analysis revealed the influence of individual factors. Higher distrust in AI correlated with a lower perceived likelihood of mentioned developments, while a greater affinity for technology interaction and higher trust in AI were linked to a higher likelihood expectation. However, higher distrust was strangely associated with slightly *more* positive evaluations of potential AI impacts, while higher trust correlated with slightly *less* positive evaluations. This suggests that trust and distrust in AI are complex factors shaping public perception and that these factors may not be direct predictors of positive or negative evaluations.
